Why Lightweight Luxury?

A witty and beautiful friend of mine coined the phrase "lightweight luxury" during a conversation about our own and our friends' lifestyles. Though she was not referring to me at that moment, it stuck. I chose it to title this blog (with gratitude and permission) not only for its clever alliteration but also because it speaks to the way I try to live my life, as well as my objective with this blog.

My eternal quest, as documented on this publication, is to live that life without living that life. How can we acknowledge beauty for the valuable art-form, self-care tool, and weapon of confidence that it is while remaining critical of it? While acknowledging that it can be harmful to our earth by urging us to buy products and quickly dispose of them? Harmful to our mental health by encouraging comparison at every turn? Harmful to our wallets by pressuring us to live a lifestyle inaccessible to most, and to feel less than if it’s out of reach? And at times, even harmful to our physical health? That’s why the phrase lightweight luxury fits. We give a nod to our love of beauty while doing our best to critique and circumvent the worst parts of it. It's complicated, and there's a lot of opposing urges involved. I hope you'll stick with me through the journey.
